Korean Movies have always been a little different in recent times…here’s a new one.

Cannes winner Park Chan-wook’s film have dealt with heavy topics like revenge and tensions between North and South Korea.
But his new film is a love story set in a mental institution, with one character under the delusion that she’s a cyborg.
The acclaimed South Korean director said on Monday the change in topic was refreshing.

“All the movies I’ve done in the past revolve around darker themes. It was like being under water. This time making the cyborg movie was like coming up for some air,” Park said through a translator.

Park was speaking at a news conference on the sidelines of the Hong Kong International Film Festival to promote the movie I Am a Cyborg, But That’s OK, which stars South Korean singer Rain and actress Lim Su-jeong.

The film is a romantic comedy about a girl, played by Lim, who thinks she is a cyborg and checks into a mental hospital. She meets other patients and falls for a man, played by Rain, who thinks he can steal people’s souls.

Park’s credits include Joint Security Area which portrays the friendship between North and South Korean soldiers guarding their border, as well as his revenge trilogy of films including Lady Vengeance and Oldboy. Oldboy took the jury grand prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004.

The host of Monday’s press conference in Hong Kong blocked a reporter from asking Park about his views on North-South Korean relations because it was political.

Park said he was happy about his decision to cast Rain in his film. It marked the big-screen debut for Rain, a pop music star whose sculpted body and dance moves have made women swoon across Asia but is new to acting.

“Having spoken with Rain and chatted with him, it’s clearly one very good case of having selected the right person,” the director said.
