The Story of a Mouse

September 15th, 2010 by

Last night I met a cat in the dark, who stopped for a nice skritch. When I leaned down to pet him, I heard a terrible tiny shrieking, obviously a mouse in agony and terror.

After a little negotiation with the cat (and a rewarding skritch behind his ears), he reluctantly gave me his very broken ‘toy.’ The poor little mousie was - and is - in terrible shape, but how could I not want to at least try to save him?

There’s not much I can do for him right now, and the outlook seems pretty grim. He’s got a soft place to rest now, and nesting material for comfort, and food and water. If he is to recover, he has a safe place and provisions. If he doesn’t make it, he will at least spend his last hours in comfortable surroundings.

I was very happily surprised to find he made it through the night and seems to have had some of the food and water. I’ve named him Yuki, and am crossing my fingers that he will recover. Send him your good thoughts!

Pascha = Basement Cat

September 9th, 2010 by

This is Pascha, from whom I take my IGN. She’s mean, rotten, vicious, and wicked… and adorable, and kind of sweet when she thinks noone is looking.

My boyfriend’s daughters made a video of Pascha talking into her food. Click the image above to watch it. As always, it’s work-safe and kid-safe,  and no animals were harmed in the making of this video. One, however, was mildly inconvenienced.

The tabby cat seen trying to photobomb is Zephyr; he felt a little left out.

…and other fun things.

I just had to share the images because they’re amazing.

And speaking of amazing… the new items in the HKO Item Mall rock! Are you guys loving it too?

Too Much Fun!

August 2nd, 2010 by

I haven’t disappeared or been hit by a bus or…

I’ve been offline for the last couple of days, as my boyfriend’s daughters are here visiting. I wasn’t sure what to expect, since I’ve never met them before… we’ve actually had a really fun time!

We picked the kids up Saturday afternoon, and took them shopping for some extra groceries and something to wear for swimming. These poor dears don’t get sugared cereals or junk food at their mom’s house, so we loaded them up with Cookie Crisp and Trix cereals, and little pizzas and other such shameless indulgences.

The evening started off with swimming and hanging out in the hot tub. Then we all piled in for dinner and cracked up for a few hours - one of them (I won’t name names) actually laughed till she sprayed milk out of her nose *gryn* That’s how you know you’re having a good time!

Yesterday was our big adventure day - we drove a few hours out and visited Mt Rainier. Mt Rainier is one of my favorite places on Earth, so it would have been a good time even if I hadn’t been hiking with a barrel of monkeys. We saw marmots and pikas and deer and gray jays and, oddly, a grouse. And snow! One of the great things about Mt Rainier is getting to play in snow in the middle of the summer.

Upon returning, of course, we had to soak all our tired muscles in the hot tub, and then the daughters managed to drag me into the [cold!] pool. I can only guess at how annoyed all my neighbors must have been by all the splashing and laughing that late at night!

Sarah’s been patient and very welcoming, thankfully. I can’t imagine how weird it must be for her to suddenly have pseudosiblings in the house out of nowhere. *hugz* to my sweet Sarah.

I’ll  be on as I can this week, but it’ll be a bit less than usual until the weekend. My house is a zoo right now, and I’m going to enjoy every enjoyable minute of it! They’ll be leaving this weekend, so I’ll return to being constantly logged in then.

I hope you’re all having a great week!

Hooray for Hippos!

July 26th, 2010 by

It’s a slow day at work, and I don’t really have anything fascinating to say. Instead, I’ll share this groovy hippo I photographed at Woodland Park Zoo. He was totally showing off for his photo opp. I’d never really thought of hippos as having much personality, but this guy changed my thinking.

Dancing at MedFest 2010

July 17th, 2010 by

Today I performed with  Troupe Rakshanda at the Mediterranean Fantasy Festival. It was everything awesome wants to be when it grows up! The music was fun, the performances were wonderful, and the food… I found a vendor with the most amazing baklava. Omnomnom!

Got almost no sleep last night, not enough caffeine this morning, and entirely too much sun today (I have a funny little circular sunburn on each shoulder), so I’m tired and nursing a headache I’d happily live without, but I’m in good spirits after a great show.

My daughter was gracious enough to spend most of the event behind the camera, but someone was kind enough to offer to take a shot of us together.

A shot of me & Suzanne, in all of our industrial-faerie glory. Suzanne and I caught up and practiced over the last couple of weeks while everyone else was too busy with their diva-drama.

This is only 5 of the 14 of us who performed today… wish the stage had been bigger!

They can’t seem to get the air conditioning working right in here, so the office feels like an oven.  It’s too hot. Blah. That’s all I had to say.

Because We All Need a Laugh Today

June 23rd, 2010 by

We’re halfway through the week, with another half yet to go. It’s hot. We’re tired. One trip to Starbucks wasn’t enough. If you’re faced with the choice between laughing and crying, you might as well laugh… so click on the image below. Once again, this IS work-safe, parent-safe, kid-safe, pet-safe… so long as you don’t attempt to emulate it.

Pascha’s Meme: 12 Things

June 22nd, 2010 by

So, say you were meeting a new person—blind date, new friend, who knows. And you wanted them to have some idea of what kind of person you are, and who you are. But you can’t actually tell them in so many words. Instead, you have to give them a box, with a dozen things in it for them to look at/read/listen to/taste/whatever. What would you put in the box? And a copy of your journal or a link to your blog would be the same thing as just telling them directly, yourself, so that’s not allowed.

Here goes….

  1. My Starbucks card
  2. A copy of The Tao of Pooh
  3. Pair of zills
  4. Otter plushie
  5. One of the many slinkies from my desk at work
  6. Pack of Snaffle Bits (my horse’s favorite treats)
  7. A kitten (I’m assuming there are airholes in the box, of course.)
  8. Tangled pile of sparkly silver stuff (the mass of jewelry I wore last week)
  9. My iPod - everything you could ever want to know about me can be divined from my music collection
  10. Photo of my daughter
  11. My dragon ring (but only for a moment - then it goes back on my finger!)
  12. A tiny chocolate cake

If you want to play, check out MFR’s blog and join in!
