Happy Chinese New Year!

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

Chinese new year is upon us. The streets are swelling at the seams with tikoy, different cakes, dragons, fireworks and even non-chinese people such as myself, get to enjoy the festivities.

Yay!

So let the dogs scamper, the dragons duck and weave and the tikoy sizzle… It’s a new year, baby!

Chaotic Beauty

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

If you’ve read my previous post about Polysics, you would’ve noticed that I talked about The Blood Brothers. This time, I’m going to focus on them. If you’re as weathered as I am when it comes to music, you’d just be as surprised and overwhelmed as I am when you hear these boys for the first time. Many bands I have listened to but BB offers a whole new disarrayed kaleidoscope when it comes to musical love. Check them out:

With a funkafied video like this, the lyrics will be as far out as their sound. The screeching vocals, the harmony between the two vocalists, the machine-gun beat of the drums and the thwump of the bass are enough to make me more excited than a piranha seeing human legs. <3

Oh, team machine!
I’m a pound of flesh in a drum machine’s dream.
We watch crabs and lobsters eat a dead cop’s throat
and stuff our mouths with gutted stereos.
Oh, team machine!
Every single piano I’ve ever met in my life
never sounded as good as melted casio keys
burning in a sea that sings out in 3-D.
Oh, that laser rain kept me up all night again
scratching at the windows like a bright colored beast,
howling at the dawn like an adulterous priest.
Shake your hands like they’re full of feathers.
Shake your wings like they’re laced with sound.
Shake your skin like a scrambled TV.
Gnash your teeth like a flamingo swarm.
I think my night unplugged its life.
Digital sunrise!
Digital sunset!
Oh, team machine!
The world’s got no end and it’s got no beginning.
Now I’m coughing up maracas and tambourines,
looking over cliffs of eternity.
Shake your hands like they’re full of disaster.
Shake your wings like they’re painted with tar.
Shake your skin like it’s sewn with insects.
Gnash your teeth like an exploding car.
And if your night unplugs its life blame it on the laser rain.
And if your life unplugs its eyes blame it on the laser rain.
Because you can’t blame the sun, it’s been bought and sold to a day that’s never dawning.
and you can’t blame the sky, it collapsed twelve times; now it’s buried in a digital coffin.
so climb out your windowsill as the drum machines laugh to themselves.

For me, the band’s sound is EXPERIMENTAL, combining punk, hardcore, post-hardcore but I really can’t seem to put my finger on it. There’s a hint of disco (especially for this song), punk, metal, heck, even trance.

They sound divine live too.

If a band sounds just like the cd version when they’re live, it’s a good sign.

For sure, this band is definitely original. Most people say that "original" doesn’t necessarily translate to "talented".

For me, if you have the guts to pull off an original sound, that automatically translates to awesome talent since you’re doing things everyone else isn’t doing.

However on November 2007, they officially disbanded, which broke my heart.

"Dear Friends,

After 10 years of making music as The Blood Brothers, we have made the collective decision that our time together has come to an end. We feel extremely fortunate to have spent such a deeply memorable and amazing part of our lives with each other. At this point, however, we feel it’s best that our futures move forward on separate paths. We’d like to express our sincerest thanks and gratitude to all the bands we’ve played with, individuals who have helped us make our records, and fans who have come to our shows and picked up our music throughout the years. Your friendship, support and love hold such a profoundly special place in each of our hearts. We hope that the memories you attach to our music are as fond as those you have given us. Thank you and take care, we’ll miss all of you.

Love,
The Blood Brothers"

However, their sound still lives on. Go find their cds!

The Rock Out Spotlight: 30 Seconds to Mars

Monday, February 4th, 2008

Created in 1998 by Jared Leto and his brother, Shannon, 30 Seconds to Mars began as a small family project. Things began to speed up quickly, and Matt Wachter later joined the band as bassist and keyboard player. After working with small revolving door of guitarists (as the band’s first two guitarists, Kevin Drake and Solon Bixler, left the band due to issues primarily related to touring), the three auditioned Tomo Miličević to round out the band’s roster.

The band logo

The band’s phoenix logo (which the band named "Mithra") bears the phrase "Provehito in Altum", the band’s motto. Roughly translated from Latin, this means "Launch forth into the deep"; but a more stylized version would be "Rocket in(to) High(ness)".

This is 30STM’s new video, A Beautiful Lie. It’s got quite a nice backstory to it. Enjoy.

Here’s another video for A Beautiful Lie, but this time, it’s live. As I said before, a band’s gauge is live music. Good live = GOOD

Enjoy.

Nothing like showering you people with fantastic music. :D

Favorite Lines

Friday, February 1st, 2008

You have probably deduced that I’m a music fiend and to tell you the truth, I have like 14gigs worth of music in my computer, which is striking at best. (of course there are a lot more people out there who claims to have more music than I do).

Well, I have 14gigs worth of music that I LOVE TO LISTEN TO. I don’t just amass music and only listen to half of it.

Anyway, I was thinking earlier what kind of blog post that I should be doing today so…. I decided to share with you my favorite lines from different songs. Who knows, you might like ‘em too. :D
