“HOPIA EXPRESS”
August 16, Thursday, @ the
College of Arts and Letters (CAL) A.V.R. from 1pm to 4pm.
About the Film:
Kinky is a recent Chinese immigrant living in Manila’s neon-lit Chinatown. She falls for a stranger who frequents the yam cake store where she works. Unable to speak his language, Kinky relies on his schedule and the cake he loves to buy to forge a friendship. One day, he doesn’t show up when she expects him to.
About the Director:
?Born in 1982 in Manila, Janus Victoria studied Communication Arts and Filipino Literature. Since graduating in 2003, she has been working as a feature writer for local publications, and as a volunteer for Cinemanila International Film Festival. In 2005, she attended the 1st Asian Film Academy in Busan, South Korea..
“Hopia Express of Ateneo?s Janus Victoria. Adjudged as Best Short Film (2nd place after Ishma Award), it presents an improbable romance between a GI (genuine Intsik immigrant) working as an attendant at a hopia store in Binondo, and a call center employee (played by Mark Anthony Fernandez). This is obviously a homage to Wong Kar Wai?s In The Mood for Love with the touches of a Joyce Bernal kilig flick. Clermont Ferrand?s festival director, Jean Michele Dissard, is so impressed with Hopia, he is bringing it to the Cannes of short films in France next year.” - Project Backspace
