Makati City, Philippines - An Electric Jeepney (E-Jeepney), the first public transport system of its kind in Southeast Asia, coasts along Ayala Avenue in the Philippines’ financial capital of Makati City. The jeepneys - electric-powered version of the Philippine icon which traces its roots to the US Willy’s jeep - were launched by GRIPP (Green Renewable Independent Power Producer), Greenpeace, and the Makati City Government. The Electric Jeepneys, part of an innovative project led by GRIPP, are meant to steer clear of the use of fossil fuels to help mitigate climate change, even as they address urban problems such as air pollution and solid waste.”

But what can you say about

bringing E-Jeepneys to U.P.?

I think that it would be very nice and intelligent if the government does so. Gradually shifting from this old, worn-out, noisy, polluting IKOTs, TOKIs, etc. would be better off for U.P., its students, and the environment.

And as for the drivers, the government should make a program for them to later on own the E-Jeepneys with a “rent-to-own” program with matching education about the benefits of the E-Jeepney. In the end, everyone would be happy, don’t you think?

  1. Hmm… Yeah. I heard that it’s really pretty expensive. Imagine if one of those breaks down pa, they’re screwed.

  2. 500,000 pesos ($10,000) for one unit… Yeah, the government should provide a recharging/repair station *for example, in UP* :)

  3. Hi Superbong! I read about this in the newspaper and was glad to see your entry about this as well. If the govt wants to launch this, they need to put their support behind it.. and I just hope they look ahead and that this is not just one of those projects that fall on the wayside after a few years…or months. I agree with Amethyst_lover, it seems quite expensive, comparing the price to the orginal sarao jeeps…perhaps subsidized funding by the govt… it would be a welcomed sight to see these clean jeeps replace the smoke belching buses.

  4. […] On a similar note, I would like to share that the electric jeepney has been launched here in the Philippines. Superbong reports… […]

  5. good move but hopefully, the technology can be transferred to manong drivers. the question is how. it’s too expensive. huhu.

  6. marvinm: yeah! i know! ..but I don’t think that this is included in the governments immediate plan of action.. lets wait for GMA’s SONA..

angelfabad: i really hope that in 50 years time, we’ll all be using e-cars already.. sana! it is expensive..compared to the original one…i hope they find a good way.. :)
