SUMODOWNLOAD Remembers: Heath Ledger

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Today the world has lost a true gem. No, it’s not a game nor a gamer; not a developer; it’s not even in the video game industry.

No no.

In case you’ve missed a good part of the day today, I should tell you that Heath Ledger is dead. He was found dead in a hotel room in New York City. He was 28.

I know this piece of news is not related to gaming whatsoever, I felt that it was important for all y’all to realize that an actor (of MY generation at least) has left this world and that it’s a shame that he hasn’t lived a good portion of his life yet.

So what’s the point of telling you people?

Well, have you at some point in your life wished that you had a “save game” option that you can just select everytime you are about to make a very important decision that threatens the very fabric of your existence? Have you ever dreamed of just “loading a save file” everytime a risk blew up in your face and it’s ridiculously hard to pick up the pieces?

We all do at some point.

Point is, life is not a video game. Sure, it can often be compared side by side with an MMORPG where you grind (work) and grind and grind and grind until you get loot and spend. A game where you hone and harness your skills to edge out competitors? But no, life is more than that.

Before I blabber on and say something incoherent and retarded. I’ll end it here. Point is, love life because before you know it…

*snaps*

Lights out.

So…. play as much GOOD games as you can.

P.S. Joker is probably Heath’s greatest and most challenging role ever. Can’t wait to watch it.

Make Mr. Fenix Proud. *Bang Bang*

Monday, January 21st, 2008

This, dear game-heads, is the transformation of a Nerf gun (and some chainsaw toy) into the Lancer. Well, your follow up question could possibly be, “what the heck is a Lancer, anyway? Mitsubishi, right?”

No.

The Lancer, my pedigreed chums, is THE weapon of choice of Cogs - ummm Cogs are soldiers in Gears of War and Marcus Fenix is the most rocking of all.  Discovered this in Kotaku.

NerfHaven forum poster Forsaken_angel24 has taken his love of All things Nerf and Gears of War to a new level. Using a Nerf rifle and a toy chainsaw from Home Depot, Forsaken_angel24 was able to cobble together a reasonable and realistic looking copy of Gears of War’s most infamous weapon, the Lancer. If you are interested in making one of your own, he gives full instructions in a posting on the NerfHaven forums.

“Hey kid, nice gun.”

I always wanted to learn to build COOl stuff out of nothing (Lego doesn’t count) and Forsaken_angel24 just made me realize even more that I SUCK.

Video Games and Concerned Parents

Monday, January 21st, 2008

Being someone who can’t sit still unless he’s fiddling with something, I decided to get myself one of those PicooZ helicopters being flown over people’s heads in the shopping mall near our house.  Although I was a complete noob, I thought I knew enough without reading the manual.  The store attendant can do it, why can’t I?  Once I got it home, I unpacked the tiny helicopter, charged it for a few minutes and proceeded to mash the throttle.

3 things happened: the dog freaked out, my girlfriend freaked out, and I freaked out.  It’s hard to think such a small palm-sized machine made out of foam and plastic can be so terrifying.  To the dog, it must have been like the weirdest creature to spawn from hell, to my girlfriend it was the whirling blades of death, and to me it was my hard-earned money about to disintegrate on the wall.

You see, being a complete newbie, I had no idea how to fly it.  The little thing came zipping around hitting the ceiling and everything else it thought it wanted to bounce to.  I did not know what I was doing.  I did not know what was happening.  I did not know anything!  It all happened in a flash.  It took a while for my brain to register that I had to release the throttle.  I released it and down it came with a soft thud.

Almost every living thing with a brain fears the unknown.  That’s why kids are afraid of the dark.  In the dark you can not see, if you can not see, you most likely won’t know for sure what’s around you.  Their vivid imagination starts creating its own monsters in place of the void.  The unknown brings uncertainty.  Remember how nervous you got when you first tried to have a conversation with a person you really liked?  The uncertainty of whether or not he/she would talk to you and maybe even what you want to talk about is what is making you nervous.  Old sailors were afraid to sail too far because they feared what may be the edge of the world.

Where am I going with this?  Well I recently read an article entitled “Xbox is Crack For Kids” at the Times Online and the first thing that popped into my head was this.  The author seems very much afraid of what her children are playing or watching.  According to her:

Once, such kids would be the playground outcasts, but no longer. Mine are. Because, unlike the TV-hating parents, I refuse to buy them portable gaming consoles, Xboxes, GameCubes, PS2s. These are Satan’s Sudoku, crack cocaine of the brain. Even the crappiest cartoon or lamest soap teaches a child about character, plot, drama, humour, life. Playing videogames, children are mentally imprisoned, wired into their evil creators’ brains. And they play them - beepety-beep - on journeys, over family meals, any minute in which they find themselves unamused.

Really, does she know what she is talking about?  Does she know what her children can and can not play?  Can she operate these systems?  Does she know why kids are attracted to video games?  Does she know that there are educational games out there that can prove to be really helpful in her child’s learning?  From all the generalizations in that article, I think not.

I’m not saying video game addiction does not exist.  It does.  However, if parents simply watch what their children are playing, choose their games wisely, and implement a good system to ensure they don’t spend to much time on the consoles or PC’s then there shouldn’t be any harm.  Play what they play.  Play alongside them and bond with them.  Learn, and benefit from it.  Who knows, you might enjoy it.

After a few more days of practice, my little PicooZ is buzzing around gently in my living room, our dog happily chasing it.  My girlfriend is still hesitant but I could get her to hold her hand out and land the little chopper on her hand.  WE are having fun.  Things change when you already know.

I’m Back, Baby!

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

After a much needed sabbattical, I, your humble bad-boy of video-game blogging (I kid, of course), I AM BACK! Yes! Woohoo! The next round is on me!

Anyway, with the Journalist of White-Haired Descent taking a hiatus, it’s my turn to spread a little lovin’ in Sumodownloadin’.

Just the thought of me being back in SD makes me giddier than a schoolgirl watching a Channing Tatum movie.

You might ask “Mr. Tenspeed, whatever have you been doing when you were gone?” Well, dear and concerned reader, I’ve played a lion’s share during the twilight months of ‘07. I must admit, ‘07 was a whirlwind of top-notch, groin-grabbingly good games. Just when you thought that one game would be the top-dog of the year, another would sneak right in and moisten even more the appetites of already spoiled gamers.

“God of War 2! *splashes blood*”

“Oh Bioshock was awesome. That’s definitely game of the year!”

“Oh, look Halo 3 is out! We have a new winner!”

“Guitar Hero 3, baby!”

“Call of Duty 4! It is love!”

“Gears of War for the PC! GG”

“World in Conflict. YAY!…. *jaded sigh*”

“Nothing like rocking out to Rock Band!”

“SUPER MARIO GALAXY!”

The point is, ‘07 was an awesome year for games but don’t think for a second that ‘08 was up to snuff. With a whole plethora of “4’s” coming out - GTA 4, DMC 4, and MGS 4 - us gamers will be neck deep in gaming glory; not to mention a whole squidload of other good games just dying to burst out of game developers’ cages. Thou shant worry, Sumodownload will be in the frontlines and we promise to deliver blazing opinions, hot news and MAYBE juciy behind-the-scenes stuff.

MAYBE.

Hahaha! Moving on, I promise to live up to the legacy of White-Haired Journalist for he is awesome. Fret not, he’ll be back.

2008 is going to be awesome for gamers. Of course, it’ll come with its fair share of scandals and issues. Stay tuned.

Upcoming Resident Evil CGI movie revealed!

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

OH.MY.GOSH

No live action movie for Resident Evil this time (which in my opinion were not good Resident Evil movies). The trailer for it looks really yummy!

Without a doubt, it is shown that Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy are present in the movie. If they’re gonna work as a pair there, I swear I’ll watch this movie over and over again.

I sense this movie will be good as it seems that they’re picking up from where Leon Kennedy ended in the Resident Evil 4 game. This time, it’s “Seven years have passed since the Raccoon City incident.”

Reliving Classic Music

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Admit it, a game’s soundtrack can make or break a game.  A good soundtrack can separate an average game from a really good one.

Games have gone a long way now.  Almost all of the quality games around have some epic orchestral pieces designed to give the game a grand feeling, or some mp3 track of some really famous bands you could simply rock-on into.  Back then, we had 8 bit Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) tunes.  Nothing fancy there, but they served their purpose, sometimes becoming as iconic as the games they came from!

Here’s to reliving those old days:

Can you guess which games some of these songs came from?

Typhoon Games and Sanrio Digital graces GX-Con

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

Hong Kong based companies Typhoon Games and Sanrio Digital made their presence known in the Philippine market when we participated in the first Philippine gaming console convention, the GX-Con.

Their booth had some pretty interesting features for their guests.

Typhoon Games featured a nice trailer of Lost Planet, one of the latest games developed by developer titan Capcom. TG was the one responsible in porting the game, originally for the Xbox, to PC.

Sanrio Digital on the other hand, featured a bunch of Hello Kitty 3D animations, where it clearly shown plans in making a Hello Kitty digital animation show.

Their booth also offered job opportunities for talented people who can do outstanding web designs and can do write ups . For more information on this one, go here.

To boost their popularity in the Philippine Market, they had these cool pins as giveaways.

But that’s not everything these guys have to highlight. One of their very own staff won one of the three tournaments the PlayStation 3 has to offer.

Their very own JJ Leonano ranked 1st place in one of the two tournaments PlayStation 3 offered: Virtua Fighter V. He topped the the tournament by defeating 4 of the 16 players that joined the contest and won himself a WWE championship belt, sponsored by Toy Kingdom.

“I just got lucky” Leonano said. “I have been playing fighting games since the Street Fighter II era and I think that’s the reason why I feel really comfortable with fighting games, even if I just played them for the first time. As long as I know what the punch and kick buttons are, bring em on!” Leonano added while laughing.

The other tournaments held in the convention were Need 4 Speed Carbon, Halo 3, Dead or Alive, NBA Live 2007, Wii boxing and Tennis, Cooking Mama and Pokemon Battle Revolution.

Typhoon Games, a game developing and publishing company, and Sanrio Digital, a dedicated company in marketing Sanrio, are partners of Outblaze Ltd., a company that specializes in digital messaging services.

Ada Wong and Dante surprises the Typhoon Games/Sanrio Digital table

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

Resident Evil 4 and Devil May Cry 3 were two of the games that were ported from PlayStation 2 to the PC by Typhoon Games. We were really surprised when these two decided to visit us during the convention.

(My looks are what kills.  Not my gun)

Ada Wong, played by one of the Phillipine’s best cosplayer ms. J.T. Lim, said she had a hard time picking out who to cosplay because there aren’t a lot of asian characters that would fit her asian features.  That’s until her friends unlocked Ada’s storyline in Resident Evil 4.  She played it, loved it, and decided that Ada is for her.

Veteran cosplayer ms. Lim said that she started cosplaying since 2003.

Whoa! Look at this guy! We didn’t expect to see “the” Dante of Devil May Cry in our table! He sure did told me what he wanted and I have no intentions of breaking my promise! XD

(Dante: You better make me look good on your reviews!)

Here are more of the good cosplayers in the event:

Freya from Valkryie Profile

Tifa Lockhart of Final Fantasy VII

Sorry, I just had to post another picture of her. XD

Ling Xiaoyu of Tekken

Asuka Kazuma also from Tekken

Naruto’s group &  Bleach’s Ichigo with their…umm…Stage manager.

Gambit, Iron Man, B.B. Hood, Viewtiful Joe, Ayame, Jin, Stryder Hiryu, and Dante

Fate/Stay Night’s Archer

World of Warcraft’s Arthas and Fate/Stay Night’s Lancer

Pinoy PSX participates in the first gaming console convention

Monday, October 8th, 2007

Pinoy PSX, an active group of individuals that are dedicated in playing games on their favorite console: The PlayStation 3, joined GX-Con yesterday by having a cool gimmick on their table: they brought their very own PS3 console and a big plasma tv, letting their guests enjoy the latest games available to the fullest.

Mike Meano, one of admins of their group, told us a little bit about their community.

“Pinoy PSX, a community of PlayStation afficionados, was not really formed from scratched. Most memebers were originally from the Pinoy Xbox community site. As of now, we also have members hailing from Singapore, New York and Canada.”

This was not the first time Pinoy PSX participated in this kind of event. In the past, they held a PSP event in the World Trade Center, attended the Comic Convention also at Megamall’s Megatrade hall, and even partnered with an amusement center named Powerstation where they sponsored an NBA Live and Tekken tournaments.

When asked to comment what PS3’s stand is here in the Philippines, Mike said:

“Well, the PS3’s most likely the main hub contesting over the Xbox 360. And because of piracy, some people are choosing the Xbox. But since xbox also has some downfalls like overheating, some people are still loyal to the PlayStation.”

TOKYO GAME SHOW ‘07: HOMEcoming still far for the PS3

Friday, September 21st, 2007

(News by White-haired Journalist)

At Tokyo Game Show, Sony President and COO Kaz Hirai said in his speech that plans for the PS3 Home’s release this fall has been delayed. This is because they wanted to be careful in developing it so that it would reach the satisfaction of consumers around the globe.  The new release date for Home would Spring next year.

“I’m sorry about the delay, but since we want this to be a worldwide service…Our territories all have their own wishes for it…it’s taking a bit longer for us to develop.” said Hirai. “We want Home to be satisfactory to all types of users around the world, so we decided to delay it.”

The PS3 home is like a massively multiplayer online lounge where players can chill out in their cyber houses, make new friends, discuss their favorite game etc.

W-h J: Well, it’s just right that hypes of this kind should be tested over and over again before releasing it to avoid the tedious task of making gamers download the patch just to fix the developer’s mess. Madden ‘08 anyone?

Gamer: Yay! Champions of Norrath is out!
Game: *Crashes* *Glitches*
Gamer: Bummer

XD
