Nintendo reclaims peak position in Japan console, handheld sales

PlayStation Portable Slim and PSP-exlusive game Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII’s joint launch were a success in Japan, giving Sony the lead spot in handheld sales.

Sadly for Sony, it only lasted for three weeks.

This week, charts show that the Nintendo DS Lite’s sales closed in to 87,445 units sold, compared to PSP’s sales that came to a close of 86,895. According to Media Create, a Japanese company that gathers and analyzes data from the digital entertainment industry, the recent release of the new DS versions (Red and Black) helped Nintendo in boosting its sales.

On the console side, the Wii is still on the top, selling 20,704 units; The PlayStation 3 selling 10,822 and the PlayStation 2 selling 10,446; while Xbox falls to a far spot selling only 1,547.

W-h J: Nintendo’s success is getting scarier by the minute. Efortlessly selling their wares and it sells like pancakes. It seems like people really are jumping into the bandwagon of trying it out, constantly making non-gamers into gamers. Should Nintendo release more and more paraphernalias and good games for its console, I think Wii will really stay in the top for a long, long time. As for the PS3, i still think it’ll do good in the future when the public already accepts the Blu-ray as a part of their household. But for now, I don’t think DVDs will be phased out just yet. At least not for the next 2 years. As for the 360, I hope Microsoft comes in with a fine gimmick to close the gap in console sales.

Blank DVD: 16 cents
Blank Blu-ray disc: $20
Talk about the price gap. Yikes!
