Way of the Dragon

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

I don’t know anybody who hasn’t even remotely heard of Bruce Lee. The man is a legendary creature akin to Elvis or even Hitler (although the latter was more notorious than popular), and you can’t mention martial arts without running into Bruce Lee’s name somewhere along the line. Up to this day, he is honored as one of the world’s most extraordinary martial artists and athletes.

But his physical prowess alone wouldn’t have earned him the adulation and the respect of millions upon millions of fans. It was his acting career that nearly turned him into a household name during his lifetime, all of which began as a small sidekick role in The Green Hornet that eventually blossomed into such popularity that up to this day, the show is known as The Kato Show in Lee’s home country of Hong Kong.

In the meantime, the western world had it’s own fair share of martial arts superstars, and one of the foremost examples would have to be Chuck Norris, the man with the legendary roundhouse kick. Though he wasn’t as deadly, or admittedly, as well-built as Mr. Lee was, Chuck Norris was, perhaps, one of the few people who could possibly stand up to the dragon’s lightning-like attacks blow for blow, and the film Way of the Dragon finally brought the two together on the silver screen for one explosive fight sequence.

Unfortunately, that’s all I’ve seen of this film - the fight between Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris. And wow, does Lee ever own the fight sequence. He initially gives Norris the illusion that the latter had the upper hand, but when he starts taking the fight seriously, there was only one way the fight could end: with the decidedly unimpeachable defeat of Chuck Norris.

If anybody can get me a copy of this film, it shall be greatly appreciated. I’ve tried looking for images, but I can’t seem to find anything that’s work-safe (the fight scene itself ended with a very bad, negative note) .

Kung Fu Letdown

Yes I saw Kung Fu Panda the other day. And yes, I liked the movie. The animation was fantastic all throughout, the musical score was - for a kids’ movie - really cool, and really, with a cast like that, you can’t go wrong with the voice acting. Dustin Hoffman and Jack Black outdid themselves in this film, and you could tell that the effort that went into acting out even the smallest of roles was gargantuan, to say the least.

But the problem was that there were too many small roles, considering that it was a small cast, to begin with.

Okay, I can understand that the show was meant for kids, but you topbilled the main character with a cast of characters voiced by illustruous actors like Jacky Chan and Seth Rogen; it only follows logically that you USE these actors effectively, right?

Unfortunately, though, this is hardly the case with Kung Fu Panda. Angelina Jolie and Lucy Liu hardly get enough character development as Tigress and Viper, but what really got my goat was that Jacky Chan, as Monkey, hardly got twenty lines into the film. I would never have known that he was the voice actor behind the monkey if I hadn’t stayed for the credits. That’s how much of a wallflower the rest of the cast was, when compared to Po, Shifu and Tai Lung.

Don’t get me wrong: the movie was really, really good, and you’d have to be a cynic not to enjoy it even one bit, but it seemed like a waste of talent to get all of these big names just to act as wallflowers in a film that’s just bursting with untold potential.

Hello Kitty and Malaysia

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Malaysians, beware: your mobile phones are about to be overloaded by cute.

Which is a good thing, of course. Apparently, Hello Kitty and Friends has launched a mobile WAP portal in conjunction with Maxis Communications Bhd, and is ready to serve the 1.8 million-strong 3G users of Malaysia.

I don’t know what material this’ll be including, though. I just found this interesting because it features a picture of Hello Kitty during a contract-signing event. I mean, I know she’s an ambassador and all, but there’s always something magical about seeing that big ol’ cat at a contract signing.
