A Dot Com City

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Before the new millennium, there was a town called Halfway, Oregon. And then came 1999. Half.com suddenly appeared on their doorsteps and convinced the mayor to change the name of their city in honor of the site. In exchange, they offered financial support. Come January 19, 2000, the town welcomed a new name: Half.com, Oregon.

Honestly, this is the first time I’ve heard of a dot com city. Know of any other places out there (present in both the cyber- and real worlds?)

Michael Jackson Owns the Rights to "The Beatles’" Songs

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

Most of ‘em, anyway. The Prince of Pop outbid other prospective buyers, including Paul McCartney himself) in buying ATV’s 4,000-song music catalog, which had most of The Beatles’ songs recorded there.

What happened was, the Beatles sold the publishing rights of their songs to Northern Songs, a company owned by their manager (so as to lessen the yaxes they were paying, which was huge considering the amount of income they were generating) - though they still retained some shares there. However, they lost their attempt at a buyout bid for control of the company when Dick James and Charles Silver (higher-ups of Northern Songs) sold their shares to Sir Lew Grade, head of Associated Television Corporation.

Fox to adapt 9-year-old’s self-help book (Reuters)

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

Got this from Yahoo!:

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Fox is ready to take advice from a 9-year-old.

The studio has acquired the film rights to "How to Talk to Girls," a cute 46-page self-help tome written by Alex Greven, a Colorado fourth-grader.

Greven wrote "Girls" as a handwritten, $3 pamphlet sold at his school book fair; he wrote it after he noticed his peers were having some trouble talking to the ladies, though the book is geared for all ages. Among this advice: Comb your hair and don’t wear sweats; control your hyperness and cut down on sugar if necessary; a crush is like a love disease that can drive you mad; it is easy to spot pretty girls because they have big earrings, fancy dresses and all the jewelry but are like cars that need a lot of oil.

Soon enough Harper Collins picked up the book, which came out in November and quickly became a hit. But initially, Fox, which is like Harper Collins is owned by News Corp ., and its book scouts passed on the title. But when the book hit the town last week, garnering heavy interest from multiple parties, Fox stepped back in and took the book off the table. The deal was in the low-to-mid six figures .

No writers or producers are attached yet.

Oh, cool, a dating self-help book from a nine-year old. What’s next? A five-year old making a manuscript on car racing? Don’t get me wrong, I admire the kid for writing a book, but seriously? A nine-year old?

Be Careful How You Nod Your Head in Albania

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

In Albania, nodding your head means "no" and shaking your head means "yes."

Better be careful what you mean there.
