Believe it or not, chop suey is actually an American dish, and it dates from 1860s.

While the name was derived from the Cantonese "shap sui" ("mixed bits"), it doesn’t mean that it actually originated in China.

While no one knows who exactly started the dish, what’s clear is that it was first made in America. Whether by Americans or immigrant Chinese, no one knows.:o
