Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

During warm weather hippopotamus’s secrete sweat that is pink. This substance not only cools them down but also helps fight infections of the skin.

Cool, eh?

Some other facts involving the hippopotamus:

- “Hippopotami” is actually accepted as the plural version of “Hippopotamus”.

- In spite of their stubby legs and heavy build, hippopotami (I love that word!) can actually easily outrun a human being.

Did you know that there are actually three species of birds that are (wait for it) poisonous?

The deadliest of these is the Hooded Pitohui, from Papua New Guinea. Its poison is actually similar to those dart poison frogs, which oftentimes cause paralysis.

Who would’ve thought such a cute little thing could be so lethal?

Icy Delight on a Stick

Once upon a time (well, more like 1905), an eleven-year old Frank Epperson left his glass of powdered soda and water on their front steps. When he checked back the next day, he saw that his drink froze solid, and it tasted really, really good!

Frank and his friends definitely loved it, but it would only be after 18 years that he would apply for a patent of his “invention.” Not knowing what to call it, he initially gave it the name “Epps-sicle”. His kids had a different idea, though: whenever they asked for their favorite treat, they’d call it Pop’s sicles, and the name stuck, but became shortened (well, by a single letter and an apostrophe) to popsicle.
