Who Was Murphy?

“Murphy’s Law” is this smart-sounding term used to describe the phenomenon, “When it rains, it pours.” Or more succinctly, “If things go wrong, they’re going to go wrong big time.”

Now, who is Murphy?

There’s this idea that there was this guy who lived in the 20th century named Edward Murphy, whose assistant made a mistake in one of his [flight] inventions. Legend goes on that he says, somewhat disgustedly, about his assistant, “If that guy has any way of making a mistake, he will.” The medical doctor John Paul Stapps was the one who tested out the invention on crash dummies, so he was the one who saw it fail, and also the one who mentioned “Murphy’s Law” in a press conference.

Now you know Murphy.:p
