Slavery Escape
By Lisa Ngo
Hi my name is Fredrick Douglass and I’m black and I’m 13 years old and I have a little brother named Nat. I’m very smart and unique and Nat is very brave. My mother’s name is Harriet Bailey. My mom is the best and I love my mom. I have an aunt named Betty. I was born into slavery in Maryland in 1818. Every slave wears a silver slave ring. I get whipped all the time; I worked every day with no break and I am hungry. We live in a small cottage with one room, kitchen, and living room in the same room. My master’s name is Bob Stephan. My dad died because Bob shot him for escaping, I miss him so much. Now I’m going to tell a story about how I escape from slavery and helped everyone escaped so…
It was a very hot day, I was sweating like hippo.
“Get back to work!” Bob yelled.
Bob whipped me on the back. I felt like instead of getting whipped on my back it was my heart. I had scars everywhere. When I was working in the fields and picking crops, my back was in pain so much so I got up to drink water. He got the jug and poured water in a cup.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Slave trader asked.
“I’m getting a drink of water” I replied.
The Slave trader took my cup and threw it.
“YOU CAN’T DRINK THIS WATER, IT’S ONLY FOR THE MASTERS OR TRADERS!” The Man yelled in my ear.
The man whipped me so hard I fell on the ground.
“Hey stop it! He didn’t know!” Nat yelled bravely.
“Oh, you want to get beaten too?” The man said furiously,
“No sir.” Nat got scared.
Nat helped me up.
“Frederick are you okay?” Nat said curiously
“No. My back hurts” I replied weakly.
“Let me take you home.” Nat said,
“Oh no you’re not, you have to stay until you get all your crops picked,” The man said.
“But…” Nat said.
“It’s okay, I’ll be fine.” I said interrupted.
Nat and I went back to work. We picked more corn and wheat and put them in the baskets.
In about an hour…
We were all finished. Suddenly, I felt dizzy and then I fainted.
“Fredrick!” Nat said worriedly.
I didn’t respond because I was so weak and in pain.
“This is all your fault! You whipped him too much!” Nat yelled.
The man turned red and went to beat Nat.
“Owww! “ Nat screamed.
I opened my eyes.
“Nat!” I said weakly.
“Let’s go home and never yell at a master or trader.” I said.
We went home.
“Ugh, I can’t take this anymore.” I said angrily.
“Yeah!” Nat agreed.
Our mother got home.
“Oh my, who whipped you?” Mom said worriedly .
“The slave trader.” Nat said.
“What did you do?” Mom said suspiciously.
“I was drinking a cup of water and he whipped me for drinking water that was the masters and traders.” I replied.
“And I talked back to the trader.” Nat said.
“Oh my. Let me get the medicine from the backyard.” Mom said.
Our mom went out and got the medicine.
Aunt Betty came in our house.
“Nat I need you to…who did this to you now?” Aunt Betty sighed.
“A man whipped us,” I replied.
“Aw oh.” Aunt Betty said worriedly.
Our mom came back.
“I got the medicine. Oh hi Betty.” Mom greeted.
“Hello Harriet.” Betty replied.
“Help me put cream on their backs.” Mom said.
They put on the cream where their scars there scars were.
“Eeee It stings!” Nat whined.
“It’ll stop stinging for awhile.” Mom said.
“Okay you’re done. Harriet can you help me wash the dishes?” Aunt Betty asked.
“Yes I would.” Mom delighted.
“Oh I heard Bob has a map for every country.” Betty said.
“Oh I heard.” Harriet said surprisingly.
“Yeah and I know this place called the Underground Railroad and it’s a place for slaves to be safe and escaped.” Aunt Betty gossiped.
“Oh can we go there?” Mom asked.
“Yeah but Bob can catch us with his wild dogs.” Betty replied.
I heard them talking but I was too weak to ask questions. Their Mom and Aunt went outside and washed the dishes. Nat went and followed them.
I lied down.
“I’m so exhausted!” I said in my mind.
I was thinking and I got an idea. I went to Bob’s house. Bob’s house was bigger than mine. It was a white painted house. I looked inside the window to see if someone was in the house. No one was in there so I opened the window and climbed in. I looked for the map around Bob’s desk. I went through his stuff. I saw this wild dog book. I opened it and it said that if you sprinkle salt on your way, the dogs can’t smell you and their scent gets confused.
“Oh that’s easy!” I said.
I turned to the last page and I found the map.
“Oh I found it!” I said happily.
I heard a sound at the door and took a peek. It was Bob. I shivered.
“Oh my god!” I said surprisingly.
I hid under the table when Bob saw his desk all messy.
“Hmm” Bob said suspiciously.
Bob went in the kitchen and cooked chicken for lunch. I snuck out of his window and ran off without getting seen. Bob went back to his desk and he saw the opened window.
7 hours later…
It was midnight.
Everyone was asleep. I woke up and quietly got my map and stuff I need and sneaked out. I didn’t say bye to my family because I know they won’t let me so when I got out I ran away to the Underground Railroad. I heard dogs barking. I got a salt shaker from my backpack and threw it on my way so the dogs won’t find me. I escaped into the forest and went to the Underground Railroad. I saw this man that was the keeper of the inn.
“Hi May I get a room to sleep in” I asked.
“Sure let me see your slave ring?” The guy said.
I showed him my slave ring.
“Ok here is your key to your room” The guy said.
“Thank you sir” I said.
I went in my room and went to bed.
It was morning.
“Hi Fredrick!” Nat yelled,
“Ahh!” I screamed.
“What are you doing here?” I said surprisingly.
“I followed you” Nat replied.
“Besides I want to escape and I can’t let you escape alone” Nat smiled.
“Good point” I said.
I looked at the map
“Hmm we should go to New York” I said.
“Okay” Nat replied.
They got their stuff and escaped to New York. I looked at the map.
“Let’s go north” I said
We walked about 8 miles then they end up in a dead end in a cliff and down is very far and crossed over there is I see a forest.
“What? This is not right” I said
I checked the map
“Uh oh” I got scared.
“What’s uh oh?” Nat asked
“We have to cross over there” I shivered.
“Man, I guess it’s the only way” Nat said
They climbed until they get to the bottom.
In about 2 hours
“I’m so tired, I don’t want to climb no more” Nat said weakly
“We’re almost at the bottom” I said
Nat started falling.
“Nat!” I yelled.
I grabbed Nat’s shirt and I got him
“Be careful Nat” I said
“Okay I will” Nat said weakly
They climbed down more and then they finally got to the bottom.
“Yay!” Nat said weakly.
Nat fell asleep.
“Come on Nat, we have to climb up more”
“No I’m too tired, Let me sleep” Nat said
“Okay fine” I said.
I lie down and sleep.
About 3 hours…
Nat woke up and there was tarantula on Nat’s head.
“AHHH!” Nat screamed
I woke up and they’re tarantula everywhere.
“AHHH!” I screamed.
We got our stuff and ran and climbed up fast.
We climbed so fast that they got up to the forest.
“Yaaay!” Nat and I said.
“That was scary” Nat said
“Yeah It was” I replied.
We walked in the forest and we saw an old man attacked by wolves.
“Ahh help me!” Old man screamed.
I got a match from my backpack and threw it at the wolves and then the wolves ran away.
“Oh my Thank you for saving me” old man smiled
“No problem” I replied
“Would you like to come over my house for some tea?” Old man delighted
“I would love to, Thank you” I replied
We walked to his house and went inside his house.
He lives in a cottage but bigger than our cottage.
“So you guys are slaves?” Old man asked
“Yes we’re escaping to New York” I said
“Oh we’re near New York” Old man thinned
“Oh really?” I said
“Yes” Old man replied
Old man went to his desk and got out a paper.
“Here is a deed for you and brother or your families to be free from slavery since I want to thank you for saving my life” Old man smiled.
“Oh thank you!” Nat thanked
“Yes thank you so much!” I thanked him.
“You’re welcome” Old man smiled.
“We better go” I said
“Okay but I have a horse; do you want a ride to New York?” The Old man asked
“Yes please” Nat replied.
They went on a ride to go to New York.
In an hour…
They’re in New York. Nat and I took out our slave ring. Then they bought a house for free.
“Yay! We’re free!” Nat and I yelled.
So…We live as a normal life with no masters so then we went back to Maryland to get our family to New York. I’m glad I won’t get whipped ever again.
