K-On!: Akiyama Mio

Friday, September 24th, 2010

Shy and introverted, Akiyama Mio is a member of the Light Music Club and a bassist. She plays a left-handed, 3-Color Sunburst Fender Jazz Bass with a tortoiseshell pickguard. Mio initially planned to join the Literary Club, but was forced by Ritsu Tainaka (her childhood friend and the club drummer) to join the Light Music Club. Mio is an academic achiever, and she gets excellent grades in school, though she hates listening to subjects that involve macabre experiences such as ghosts, blood, barnacles and haunted houses.

Akiyama Mio also dislikes being the center of attention, which is why she chose the bass as her musical instrument. Along with Yui, Mio is one of the band’s primary vocalists, though because of her dislike being in the spotlight, she tries to avoid being the lead vocalist as much as possible, only volunteering to perform whenever Yui is unable to.

Mio is more technical when it comes to music, and Yui often comes to her when she is in need of more guitar tutorials. She writes most of the club’s songs, even though the lyrics were deemed a little odd and too girlish, featuring words such as “Light and Fluffy Time!”

Vampire Knight: Yuki Cross

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Yuki Cross is the adoptive daughter of Cross Academy’s headmaster, Kaien Cross. She’s a first year student at Cross Academy and a Prefect tasked to monitor and keep peace among the Day Class, which consists mostly of human students, and the Night Class, which is composed of vampires. Yuki is later revealed to be a pureblooded vampire princess, Yuki Karan. Her mother, Juri, sacrificed herself to seal Yuki’s true nature as a rare pureblood vampire, allowing her to live as an ordinary human girl for a decade.

Prior to her transformation, Yuki was mocked for being flat-chested, resembling a young boy. She’s generally a cheerful and comical person. Despite being considered a little stupid and academically incompetent, Yuki remains loyal and protective of her close friends. She is often kept ignorant by other characters who know more about goings-on, which results in her character feeling guilty for being unaware of the suffering of other characters.

Italy Wins World Cosplay Summit 2010!

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

A pair from Italy took the grand prize for costume roleplayers in the annual world cosplay championship in Nagoya, Japan last Sunday! Italian cosplayers Luca Buzzi and Giancarlo di Pierro performed a three-minute play brimming with action on stage for about 15,000 attendees. The winning pair was dressed as Link and Gannondorf, characters from the popular role-playing video game “The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess”.

The Thai and the Brazillian teams won the second place as runner-up winners, with the Thai pair receiving the Brother Award for their amazing costumes. Thailand’s Orawan Agavinate and Patawikorn Utissen cosplayed as Cloud Strife and the summoned aeon Bahamut SIN from “Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children”.

The World Cosplay Summit was jam-packed with thousands of cosplay aficionados and fanatics of anime, manga and video games, including the finalists of the event which began last Saturday. There were 15 countries that competed for the grand prize: Australia, Brazil, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Thailand and the United States! Well, that’s a lot, and we look forward to seeing more countries participate next year!

Final Fantasy: Black Mage and White Mage!

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Have you ever dreamed of turning somebody into a frog? Or do you think it would be amazing if you could shock baddies with electrifying bolts of thundaga and hurl sizzling balls of firaga at bird-brained bullies? If you think so, then you must be a Black Mage at heart! The “Black Mage” is one of the most famous and iconic character classes in the Final Fantasy franchise. Traditionally depicted as dark figures wearing blue or black robes and wide-brimmed hats that shadowed their faces save for their gleaming yellow eyes, Black Mages inspired awe and fear in the Final Fantasy games. They possess a wide selection of elemental spells that they can cast to wreak havoc in the battlefield and obliterate anyone who dares to cross their way.

Alodia Gosiengfiao, a Filipina Cosplayer, combined hotness and magic by cosplaying as a sexy black mage, deviating from the traditional black mages such as Final Fantasy IX’s Vivi Orunitia, yet retaining some costume elements that made her look like one undeniably. It would be amazing to see her bake people with magic!

That’s not all, though! Ashley Gosiengfiao, Alodia’s sister, also participated in the cosplay as a White Mage—a mage specializing on recuperative and support magicks!

White Mages in Final Fantasy are usually seen in immaculate white robes with hoods pulled over their heads, featuring red, triangular patterns on the cuffs of their sleeves and the hems of their robes. These sisters make an excellent magical tag-team, don’t you think so?

Final Fantasy X/Dissidia: Jecht

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Blitzball prodigy, plus manliness, plus a laidback appeal—these qualities make Jecht one of the more popular villains in the Final Fantasy series. Legendary blitzball superstar Jecht appears in Final Fantasy X as the main antagonist and in Final Fantasy Dissidia as a warrior serving Chaos, the God of Discord. He appears as a tall and muscular bronzed man wielding a nasty black sword, possessing a penchant for liquor and a tendency to drink too heavily. While actually kind-hearted, Jecht comes off as overtly cocky and arrogant, referring to himself as the “Great Jecht” and occasionally proclaims himself to be the best blitzball player there is.

Well, the man was a blitzball celebrity, after all—famed and legendary for refining his own blitzball technique “Sublimely Magnificent Jecht Shot Mark III” (or simply “The Jecht Shot”)—until his career hit a slump and he resorted to drinking like a maddened drunkard. Jecht is also the father of the FFX protagonist Tidus, who claims to hate his dad for putting him and his mother through difficult times, and for leaving him under a lot of pressure living up to the blitzball phenomenon that was his father, Jecht.

Jecht is unsympathetically critical of Tidus, but he does so to push his son to try harder and disprove him. The cosplayer, Defran, chose to make the “bronze god” come alive and he does so marvelously!

Check out that nasty flaming sword!

DC Comics Universe: Zatanna

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Zatanna is a powerful sorceress in the DC Comics Universe. Her powers are genetic since both her parents are magic-wielders. She also descended from Nostradamus and Alchemist, Nicholas Flamel.

She casts spells by reciting the words backwards. She can also cast some spells by speaking the words normally or even without uttering a word. She is also a skilled illusionist, showgirl and stage magician even without resorting to her innate magical powers.

Zatanna resides in a mansion called Shadowcrest, in which she keeps a vast library of magical knowledge, as well as an arsenal of powerful relics, enough to do "just about anything you’d want to do." Shadowcrest seems to exist in a completely different dimension, although it is initially located outside of Gotham.

Besides her appearances in various DC titles, Zatanna has appeared in Batman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Justice League Unlimited and Smallville.
