Final Fantasy: Black Mage and White Mage!

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Have you ever dreamed of turning somebody into a frog? Or do you think it would be amazing if you could shock baddies with electrifying bolts of thundaga and hurl sizzling balls of firaga at bird-brained bullies? If you think so, then you must be a Black Mage at heart! The “Black Mage” is one of the most famous and iconic character classes in the Final Fantasy franchise. Traditionally depicted as dark figures wearing blue or black robes and wide-brimmed hats that shadowed their faces save for their gleaming yellow eyes, Black Mages inspired awe and fear in the Final Fantasy games. They possess a wide selection of elemental spells that they can cast to wreak havoc in the battlefield and obliterate anyone who dares to cross their way.

Alodia Gosiengfiao, a Filipina Cosplayer, combined hotness and magic by cosplaying as a sexy black mage, deviating from the traditional black mages such as Final Fantasy IX’s Vivi Orunitia, yet retaining some costume elements that made her look like one undeniably. It would be amazing to see her bake people with magic!

That’s not all, though! Ashley Gosiengfiao, Alodia’s sister, also participated in the cosplay as a White Mage—a mage specializing on recuperative and support magicks!

White Mages in Final Fantasy are usually seen in immaculate white robes with hoods pulled over their heads, featuring red, triangular patterns on the cuffs of their sleeves and the hems of their robes. These sisters make an excellent magical tag-team, don’t you think so?

Final Fantasy X/Dissidia: Jecht

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Blitzball prodigy, plus manliness, plus a laidback appeal—these qualities make Jecht one of the more popular villains in the Final Fantasy series. Legendary blitzball superstar Jecht appears in Final Fantasy X as the main antagonist and in Final Fantasy Dissidia as a warrior serving Chaos, the God of Discord. He appears as a tall and muscular bronzed man wielding a nasty black sword, possessing a penchant for liquor and a tendency to drink too heavily. While actually kind-hearted, Jecht comes off as overtly cocky and arrogant, referring to himself as the “Great Jecht” and occasionally proclaims himself to be the best blitzball player there is.

Well, the man was a blitzball celebrity, after all—famed and legendary for refining his own blitzball technique “Sublimely Magnificent Jecht Shot Mark III” (or simply “The Jecht Shot”)—until his career hit a slump and he resorted to drinking like a maddened drunkard. Jecht is also the father of the FFX protagonist Tidus, who claims to hate his dad for putting him and his mother through difficult times, and for leaving him under a lot of pressure living up to the blitzball phenomenon that was his father, Jecht.

Jecht is unsympathetically critical of Tidus, but he does so to push his son to try harder and disprove him. The cosplayer, Defran, chose to make the “bronze god” come alive and he does so marvelously!

Check out that nasty flaming sword!

Mario Bros.: Princess Peach

princess peach

Princess Peach is a character in the ever popular video game series, Mario. She is very sweet and is often the damsel in distress.

Jenni Källberg from Sweden sure got the looks and talent to make this cosplay perfect. I also like the Goomba lurking behind her.

D.N.Angel: Hiwatari Satoshi

d.n.angel cosplay - hiwatari satoshiThe police commander in charge of capturing Dark, Satoshi graduated from high school at the age of 8, and college at the age of 13. He enrolled in Daisuke’s middle school as he knew Diasuke was Dark’s alter ego. Although most people find him cold and distant, Daisuke insisted that they become friends.

This is Hagaren, the same cosplayer as X/1999’s Monou Fuma. When I first saw this on Deviant Art, I immediately fell in love with the photo, so I had to feature it here!

Important Announcement!

Vampire Knight: Kiryuu Zero 02

vampire knight cosplay - kiryuu zero 02

Born of twins into an infamous Vampire Hunter family, Zero’s fate drastically changed when he was attacked by a pure blooded vampire, Hio Shizuka. He lost his parents and his twin, Ichiru, chose to stay with Shizuka, leaving him alone and orphaned. Despite these series of unfortunate events, Kaien Cross adopted Zero and Yuki began to help him recover emotionally.

Cosplayer “Nectar” makes a convincing Zero! And we haven’t had a lot of cosplays of him yet. Thanks to Ishitar for suggesting this!

Final Fantasy VII Advent Children: Cloud Strife 04

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

final fantasy vii advent children cosplay - cloud strife 04In the recent Anime Festival Asia 2009 where Alodia and Ashley Gosiengfiao represented Team Philippines, a famous cosplayer was among the judges and gave the sisters full marks, even though they didn’t win.

That cosplayer is known as Kaname. I recently found out that he is also the same cosplayer behind the other Cloud Strife I featured more than a year ago.

You have to admit, Kaname makes a very convincing Cloud. If anyone happens to know where his website is, I’d love to link his images back to him. Thank you!

X/1999: Monou Fuma

x/1999 cosplay - monou fuma

The antagonist who initially was known for being a kind and gentle person, Fuma is forced to become a Dragon of Earth after his friend and twin star, Shiro Kamui, chooses the Dragons of Heaven. As soon as his destiny was awaken, he immediately attacked Kamui and killed his little sister Kotori, whom he had adored.

This is cosplayer Hagaren, who has done a very good job with Fuma as well as his sword. If anyone knows where Hagaren’s website is, please do point me in the right direction and I’d be glad to credit this photo. Great work! Thanks to Christina Applegate for sending this in!
