Santol Juice Anyone?

My SIL was sharing with me her healthy alternative to your usual juice. Curious I was, I bought a kilo of santol which at the time I bought 1 kilo, it was still P10 ($0.25). I was excited because I know AD would be happy that we’d be having a juice! We drink water most of the time or make juice out of tanglad (lemongrass), honey (brown sugar or muscovado) and calamansi or anything that is made from scratch. We do drink those powdered juice but we avoid it as much as we can.

Here’s the ingredients:

4 pcs small fist-size santol, peeled and julienned. Set aside the seeds. Do not eat it :D

1 L warm water

1/3 c brown sugar/ honey

Mix everything. Gently mash the julienned santol so its juice will come out. Mix in the seeds and sugar and mix. You can add more sugar or water according to your taste. Let it cool and place it in your refrigerator. When you are about to drink it, strain the julienned santol and seeds and the juice is ready to drink! Ting!

Nutritional value to kids:
Natural source of vitamin C
Vitamin B6.
High in carbohydrates.
Contains some iron and calcium.

I’ve also learned that this is also an anti-cancer fruit. The blog also mentioned of this similar santol juice preparation so this really is being done ever since…your and my grandmother’s time.

Cool! This is definitely better than your powder drink, don’t you think and cheaper too. I know it is too hassle to prepare but remember, it is for your kids. Labor of love :)

enjoy your santol drink!
