Interesting animal tidbits

naked and colorful…

Nudibranchs are sea slugs. There are more than 3,000 described species.

Body forms can vary wildly. They lack a mantle cavity and are soft and spongy when you touch them. These creatures are tiny, their size varies from 4 to 600 mm so you have to take pictures of them on macro mode.

They are carnivorous and some are cannibals, even eating other sea slugs, or on some occassions, members of their own species. There are also groups that feed on sponges, tunicates and barnacles.

They occur worldwide at all depths, but they reach their greatest size and variation in warm, shallow waters.

Among them can be found the most colorful creatures on earth. Because sea slugs, in the course of evolution, have lost their shell, they have had to evolve another means of defense: camouflage, through color patterns that make them invisible or warn off predators as being distasteful or poisonous.
