Here’s some pics and video in using an IDE HDD with the PS3. They used an IDE to SATA Adapter. Even though the HDD would not be inside the PS3, this is a cheaper alternative of upgrading your PS3’s storage.  The pictures show off both the pre-installed and completed make-up of the IDE to SATA installation process.

The video shows the formatting of the HDD.
