Princess Princess

If you want a good laugh without particular regard to the story, I would recommend Princess Princess.

Imagine campus life in an all-boys high school…Expand your imagination and try to see three alluring beauties in cosplay gallivanting around campus, captivating and ensnaring the hearts of anyone who sees them…Further take your thoughts one-step forward and feel the undeniable excitement and fervent clamor from the throngs of students beholden by their beauty…Then, slowly, very carefully take my words as the truth…These three-some of divine exquisiteness are all B-O-Y-S.

Yup, the triumvirate of beauty, splendor and magnificence are composed of BOYS, dressed as girls in frilly, girlish yet elegant fashion. Apparently, in honor of the academy’s tradition, certain students are chosen from among the freshmen class to represent the ultimate and most cherished treasure of the academy, the Princesses. To become a Princess, certain qualities must be possessed, namely (or so I think): (1) Beauty to rival that of a maiden, that is, he must be a pretty boy and must look like a lovely girl; (2) Charisma; and (3) To-fall for personality (sugar and spice and everything nice). Tooru, the middle-of-the-semester transfer student, precisely possesses the Princess qualities, and despite his previous lack of interest and bewilderment in the so-called Princess system, he changed heart when he learned that being a Princess has to-die for perks and privileges.

I would have to admit that story-wise, the series would only rate so-so, but the comical content is definitely a redeeming factor. Besides, it is way funnier to see silly but cute young boys dressing up as adorable young girls reminiscent of the Lolita-type. It does not hurt to watch boys talking about make-up and stuff, right? Heehee…It is ridiculously hilarious to see high school boys droll over the Princesses as if they are really girls. I can’t blame them since living a life without girls is so boring. To pump up their adrenaline, their will to survive and well, to relieve their stress, the Princess system works wonder to satisfy their dreary school lives. It bears noting that this series is a feast for the eyes, and if you will watch Princess Princess, you will learn that beauty is power. My over-all rating is a 7.5. So, all I can say is, why not try to indulge in a little fantasy?
