Nightmare’s Chess

Tentacles of light crept through the window beside me. Rays of heat embraced my body while I snuggled deeper into the warmth of my bed. A few extra moments of sleep would be nice.
Footsteps echoed behind me. I turned to face a frozen cave coated with sapphire blue ice. Icicles arched from stone walls, like daggers wielded against intruders. The scene was captivating, yet unwelcoming.
The sound of footsteps grew louder, but nothing, not even a shadow can be seen. I pivoted, eying my surroundings. Only ice filled my field of vision. For a moment, it appears that footsteps could no longer be heard, although chances are, the pounding of my heart muted external sounds with its volume.
Should I walk forward and enter the cave, or turn and run? I was a frozen statue with a pulse that sounded in my ears. Still, somehow, my heavy feet walked into the cave.
The moment I was inside the cave, it became apparent that this was no ordinary cave. Carved on the walls, or perhaps inside the icy walls were figures of humans. The details were amazing, as though the carved figures would come to life and approach me. The view would have been aesthetically pleasing if not for the frightening stares of the figures.
“How have you come to this place?” A high pitched voice of a girl echoed in the cave.
“I—I don’t know. I walked in here…somehow.” I looked at the ground. Thank goodness for the ground being free of figures and views of what might lie ahead.
“Your senses are better than I thought, Fifth victim.” A disturbing laugh sounded, as though the voice had been intoxicated. My heart was pouncing in my chest. Sweat dripped from my hand. I looked around me. One…two….three…four…
There were four figures surrounding me. Four. Where was the fifth?
“You.”
Light flooded into my vision the moment my eyes snapped open. I could still hear my pulse sounding in my ears. It was a dream. A nightmare, nothing else. The same nightmare that has haunted me for a month now. I must have been reading far too many horror novels to have such a dream.
