FON & Neuf Party: Congratulations

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

Congratulations to FON for this fantastic news, from the original post:

Neuf Cegetel, the number one alternative carrier in France with over 3.5 million subscribers, and FON have updated the Neuf Box 4 (the latest Neuf Router, based on open source operating system) so Neuf subscribers can activate the new Neuf WiFi FON service, share their WiFi with Foneros around the globe, and get free WiFi access on all FON Spots everywhere. Already more than 500,000 Neuf Boxes have been centrally enabled with this FON software upgrade and the subscribers can now become WiFi sharers and receivers. By the end of 2007, around 1 million Neuf Boxes will have been upgraded with FON functionality.

Again Congratulations FON, this is a fantastic develop and a huge step forward in a WiFi free world!

Businessweek the IT 100

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

In Todays Business Week there was an article about the top most influential and meaningful  IT companies, it mentions the usual companies like Google, Microsoft, Amazon (which it ranked nr. 1) and a variety of telecom companies.

Surprisingly Yahoo was not mentioned in this article, while it it certainly true that Yahoo has experienced some trouble and is no longer the media darling I would hardly call it a company without influence, growth prospects, and most of all it is still a highly profitable company.

Despite super strong fundamentals, Yahoo continues to drop out of favour, almost like  a downward spiral, it is unfair and dissapointing that even "so called renowned publications" would fall into this media trap of negativity, a few years from now Yahoo will most likely be sung praises again, and if anything will not fall into obsolescence.

FON launches in Belgium

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

Today we are launching fonero.be together with our partners Scarlet and Tidings. Fonero.be is a new ADSL wireless broadband provider based in Antwerp, Belgium. By combining their innovative WiFi services with the FON Community, Fonero.be customers and Foneros can easily connect to the Internet using WiFi around Belgium. Pricing for this service is 29.95€ per month for 6MB service. Thanks to teaming up with Fonero.be, and Scarlet as the ADSL and voice supplier, the Belgian market will provide a dense network of FONspots that are not only important for Foneros in Belgium but also those who visit Belgium.

Extending my FON Range using a 12 DBi Omni Directional Antenna

Monday, April 9th, 2007

fon-cn-antenna.jpg

I recently purchased this at the Wanchai Computer Center for approx. US dollars 30 , it’s a China made 12.0 dBi (2.4Ghz) Antenna and supports FON, it’s 35 cm’s long and therefore quite long, the final output looks something like this..

FON with range expander

It’s pretty large…but the range improvement is decent! This is obviously not an official FON product but the Fontenna will be 7-8dBi and this one is 12!
