That does seem like to fit in with the item fusion concept of the game, like keys. And NPC’s sell these books you use for new item recipes, so it make sense that you have to unlock the recipe shops.

I think this is a truly great way to start the game, manny games i play dont offer any form of introduction to thier story so i was quite suprised when i came cross the little video during FB. Great job Sanrio!
