Oh Joy, Oh Happiness!
Tuesday, August 7th, 2007I am so very excited. My daughter is knitting… by her own free will. I thought it was because she was drinkin Haterade by the gallon because I told my friend’s daughter that I will be her fairy knitting god mother and that she will never be without yarn as long as she loves knitting. By daughter got heated when she heard me say that. I felt kinda bad, but then again, I also feel like I am wasting time and money when she showed no real interest in it. But I did make a monster ball of yarn for her with all these perty colors of Lamb’s Pride yarn- my favorite, and she showed the same ol disinterest. Then one day, she just picked up the yarn and the needles and asked me how to cast on. I tried not to let my shock show and showed her how to do it, then she took off with it and I gave her a refresher on the knit stitch, then when she had that down, I was going to refresh her on the purl stitch, but she wasn’t ready for that. She decided that she would stick to the garter stitch. So I sat watching her (discreetly) and knit, read a book or listened to my knitting podcasts.
It was very sweet. Long story short, she knits about 1/2 a row or two and then goes on to watch her cartoons. I am cool with that! She picks it up and knits without me prodding her.

We went to the bookstore last week and looked over Nicky Epstein’s book, “Knitting Never Felt Better”. That is a cool book! The cover scarf is my favorite, but we were really taken with the idea of taking your knitted item and wrapping parts over marbles, rocks, shells and other items so that when you felt the item, it shrinks over the object, so you can wrap a bunch of marbles in a cluster and when you are finished, it will look like a bunch of grapes. I don’t think I explained it right, but it was very cool and we are going to try it. I even bought some yarn for this project. Even, though I shouldn’t have…. That is another story, it is too embarassing for me to discuss my yarn fetish.
She also has an interest in sewing, and I get so very nervous when she is on my sewing machine, Lulu Wuwu. By luck, my coworker found a sewing machine and gave it to me. My co-worker is a cool guy, he can find the needle in the haystack and tell you when and where that needle was manufactured. Anyhoos, now my girl has a sewing machine. She was so excited to see it and was willing to carry it part of the way home on the bus… That is rare for her.
Oh joy.
