Fiestas here in the Philippines are very important days in each barrio.
But do we really know the real reason of why we celebrate these fiestas?
Some people forgets the real reason. All they think is the food and the disco and other fun stuff. They forget that the main reason of the celebration is to give respect to the saint in their barrio, since these fiestas are the death dates of these saints. Some forgets to go to church and pay tribute to their patron saint.
One of my classmates in college invited us to go to their hometown to celebrate their fiesta… So here, we went to Argao, a municipal of Cebu, way way south of Cebu. Their patron saint is St. Michael the Archangel.

We went to their Parish church. People were everywhere. There were lines just to get to touch and kiss the statue of St. Michael. Children were playing in the park, old friends met up with one another and planned where would they be celebrating the fiesta.

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

Usually, during fiestas, their would be discos, “piryahan” (carnivals), and… lechon!

Yup, that’s lechon alright, or at least what’s left of it. Heheh…
A whole lechon would look like this…

It’s roast pig, and it’s usually the “star of the fiestas”. A fiesta will never be a fiesta without lechon. It’s the main dish, and delicious when dipped in “sawsawan” (mixture of vinegar, soy sauce, and spices).

After we went to church, we found this wall climbing challenge…

So each tried it out. 3 out of 3 made it to the top… and that included me! Heheh… And I was the 1st girl to reach the top! Beat that! Bwahahah!
Too bad we didn’t capture the time I reached the top… *sigh*
Here’s one of my friends who was still climbing…
