SurLaLune Annotated Fairy Tales - I could spend hours just reading the content of this site!!
This is a database of just about every classic fairy tale you can think of (this page lists all of the stories available on the site).
There are two things that are especially great about the fairy tales here:
They are the real versions of the stories, as true to the original version as translation allows, and unmarred by inaccurate perceptions we form after seeing movies or “kid-friendly” alternatives to the stories…
They are annotated! Short notations explain the significance and origins of popular fairytale symbols, such as roses and “once upon a time.”
Furhtermore, after reading your favorite stories (and after discovering some new ones!), the site offers lists of various books that have been published following that fairy tale’s theme. Want to find a unique hardcover version of Cinderella? This is where you look!
I also like looking through the Illustration gallery and checking out other artists’ perceptions of these stories that I love. ![]()
