Memorial Day
Today is Memorial Day, and it’s a fed holiday, so I get a three day weekend. Yahoo. Well, not entirely.
Got called on Saturday, “The internet is down!”. No, it is really not, but I can’t really explain that to them. I log in from home, and after an hour, I know what the problem is. One of the authentication servers is down. I could reboot it from home, but in the past, we’ve had issues with remote reboots. Two core servers, in a row, did not come back, so I didn’t really want to do this remotely. Hop in the car. 30 minutes there. 5 minute reboot. 30 minutes back. Oh well, what can you do?
Anyways, other than that, zoning out on some classic John Wayne movies several of the channels are airing. Back to Bataan, and They Were Expendable, and of course the ever-epic The Longest Day.
Memorial Day is also often called the first unofficial day of Summer. June 21, of course, being the astronomical start of summer. And a more perfect day couldn’t be had. 80 degrees with 50% humidity, clear blue sky. But Memorial Day is also picnics, BBQs, parades, and of course John Wayne movies.
I was feeling very lazy, and did not want to fire up the grill, so I grilled our meal on the stove, in an awesome cast-iron grilling pan.
Start off with the classic, potato salad. My mother made this earlier in the day.
And who can have a Memorial Day lunch/dinner/linner/dunch without corn-on-the-cob?
And the pièce de résistance
I threw the onions in waaay tooo early…

That’s nice. Wow, I didn’t know that John Wayne had a movie titled Back to Bataan and Anthony Quinn’s role was the grandson of Andres Bonifacio (one of our national heroes). He he he! Good read!
