This lesson will cover すうじ (suuji- numbers) 1-20. There are Kanji for each number, but that will be covered later.
Eventually I’ll do bigger numbers up to 10,000 & じかん (jikan- time). But today, we’ll start small.
1 -10 is pretty straight forward, and very important. It’s the base for all the rest of the numbers, as we’ll see later.
| 0. | zero / ree | ゼロ* / れえ |
| 1. | ichi | いち |
| 2. | ni | に |
| 3. | san | さん |
| 4. | shi / yon / (yo) | し / よん / (よ) |
| 5. | go | ご |
| 6. | roku | ろく |
| 7. | nana / shichi | なな / しち |
| 8. | hachi | はち |
| 9. | kyu / ku | く / きゅ |
| 10. | juu | じゅう |
*zero is technically a foreign word so it’s written in Katakana which we haven’t done yet. It would be ぜろ in Hiragana.
As you can see, 0, 4, 7 & 9 have a few different ways to say them. When counting you can pick whichever one you’re more comfortable with using. However, you’ll still need to know all of them; when doing other things like telling time or giving phone numbers, only certain ones will be used.
Once you know 1-10, 11-20 is super easy! Look at it this way:
10 + 1 = 11 so…
juu + ichi = juuichi.What about 20?
2 * 10 = 20 …
ni * juu = nijuu
Easy right?
| 0. | juu | じゅう |
| 11. | juuichi | じゅういち |
| 12. | juuni | じゅうに |
| 13. | juusan | じゅうさん |
| 14. | juushi / juuyon | じゅうし / じゅうよん |
| 15. | juugo | じゅうご |
| 16. | juuroku | じゅうろく |
| 17. | juunana / shichi | じゅうなな / じゅうしち |
| 18. | juuhachi | じゅうはち |
| 19. | juukyu / juuku | じゅうきゅ / じゅうく |
| 20. | nijuu | にじゅう |
That’s it! You’ve got 1-20 under your belt!
