Scientists rock on in Antartica

June 20th, 2007 by angelfabad:hellokitty.com

Jay Leno makes a funny anecdote regarding the upcoming Live Earth concerts, where Al Gore promised will happen in all seven continents. But in Antartica, some scientists were said to have volunteered. Look what happens:

See, that’s the effect of global warming. Haha. If you want free tickets to Live Earth, you may enter this contest at ecorazzi. Deadline, unfortunately, is already today. Cheers!

Green wedding, anyone?

When June comes, there is one thing that comes to mind - weddings!

History tells us that June Weddings have roots in early Roman times, Pagan traditions and the Elizabethan England… The Roman goddess Juno — goddess of women’s well being and marriage lends her name to this month.

Pagan traditions of hand-fasting, summer solstice — the longest day of the year, first harvest — not only of crops but said to be the ‘harvest of emotions” are all part of the origin of the June wedding. Our current honeymoon, has origins in the Pagan “honey moon” — the first moon after the summer solstice and named for the honey-flavored mead drunk after the solstice hand-fasting. PRWeb.com

But now that a lot of people are becoming more conscious about the environment, consider a green wedding just like Kristy Wang and Nik Kaestner.

I read from KansasCity.Com that this lovely couple’s big day was “green” from the bridal apparel to the reception and car. Here are some tidbits:

  • The bridal gown has a design and style that makes it suitable for parties too, meaning it can be used again
  • They organized guest car pools in hybrid vehicles
  • They chose an “outdoor Japanese garden instead of a big, energy-sucking reception hall”
  • They used “homemade tablecloths that were later turned into dinner napkins”
  • The food served came from locally grown organic vehetables and fish catched using sustainable means

According to the article in the above mentioned website,

“Going green is one of the great business opportunities of the 21st century, and the rapid growth of green weddings and green wedding consulting groups is not surprising,” said David Cooperrider, a business professor at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. “In fact, wedding advisers that are not going green are going to be at a competitive disadvantage.”

Are you getting married anytime soon? Make it green.

EcoFashion Picks

June 13th, 2007 by angelfabad:hellokitty.com

I read about an ecofashion boutique opening up a new branch. Out of curiosity, I checked out the boutique’s website. It’s called Greenloop, a store that “carries an impressive array of stylish ecodesigners producing apparel and accessories that are made using sustainable materials — fabrics such as organic cotton, hemp or Tencel, or recycled or repurposed materials like old candy wrappers. [lakeoswegoreview.com]

Some of the items I really liked:

Although these items are a little more expensive than the average clothing, this will go a long way in helping the environment. If you can afford it (instead of buying mink), then why not go shop these great items.

This bag is made out of vintage automotive fabrics, which were never-used but were intended for use in American automobiles. A plus: Kim White handbags are tagged with the make and year of the fabric (1990 Mustang). This makes you know where and when your bag came from. It adds fun to sporting it. Interesting and cool, right?

This is an Anna Cohen tank top. I love the sultry bamboo fabric. It also seems very comfy to wear.

From the top, let us go to the bottom: Loomstate Organic Poplin Beach Pants.

Green Benefit: Because conventional cotton farming requires as much as 1/3 a pound of chemicals to grow the amount of cotton fiber needed to make just a single tee-shirt, much of it ends up in the air, soil and waterways we use. On the other hand, organic farming incorporates biological - rather than chemical-based - growing systems to raise crops. While large amounts of chemicals are used in growing and processing traditional cotton crops, organic cotton farming utilizes natural compost in place of synthetic fertilizers to yield a naturally strong, healthy fiber. Which means less damage to the land and water – and ultimately you.

To complete the outfit, I chose these shoes: Mohop Leila Mid Heels. It has a sleek design. With average heels, this will surely be a nice pair to wear.

This handmade shoe is composed of a laminated Finnish birch plywood core and a mottled taupe recycled rubber sole. The footbed features red stained birch or fir veneer with an original screenprinted graphic of hibiscus in black and white, and is sealed with a durable hand-rubbed marine finish.

Solar-powered recording studio in London

June 12th, 2007 by angelfabad:hellokitty.com

The music scene is definitely aware of the increasing need to decrease one’s carbon footprint. The Premises, a recording studio in London, has installed photovoltaic cells on its roof around last year to save energy and ultimately, money on the long term.

This just shows that businesses can take advantage of modern technology to be more earth-friendly.

Keira Knightley takes a green walk

June 12th, 2007 by angelfabad:hellokitty.com

snipshot_e4duoxi0rif.jpgOnce again, Keira Knightley, star of Pirates of the Carribean and Pride and Prejudice, was spotted carrying her “I’m not a plastic bag” handbag while shopping at a Farmer’s Market in central London last week.

The bag, which got sold out after Knightley was seen sporting it early this year, is from the eco-fashion line of Anya Hindmarch. At least, celebrities like Knightley choose to use their status to bring about positive change in society. Hopefully, more than being a fashion trend, this inspires people to imbibe greenism in their lifestyles.

To Keira, two thumbs up! You’re definitely more than just a pretty face! Thanks to ecorazzi.com for this scoop. Ecorazzi’s always first to know about the green trends of our favorite stars. Kudos!

Philippines’ very own Alicia Mayer leads in PETA’s “World’s Sexiest Vegetarian” Poll

June 7th, 2007 by angelfabad:hellokitty.com

It was around late February when Alicia Mayer posed for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to promote vegetarianism.

Annually, PETA conducts a “World’s Sexiest Vegetarian” Poll and it was reported that Mayer is now taking an early lead. As to how far her lead will go, I don’t know. But I did vote for her. You can cast your vote for your favorite celebrity vegetarian here.

“When you look at the more than 200 gorgeous celebrities in this year’s poll, there are no bones about it—a vegetarian diet makes you beautiful inside and out,” says PETA Asia Pacific Director Jason Baker. “After all, going vegetarian is the best thing that you can do for animals, the Earth, and yourself. Plus, everyone knows that there’s nothing sexier than someone who exudes both passion and compassion.” Davao Today

Previous winners of this poll include: Shania Twain, Carrie Underwood, and Natalie Portman. This year’s results will come out sometime late June.

Who was with Brad Pitt at Ocean’s Thirteen Premiere

June 7th, 2007 by angelfabad:hellokitty.com

Let me restate that.

“What was with Brad Pitt at Ocean’s Thirteen Premiere?”

The answer: a BMW Hydrogen 7. I know. Brad Pitt is enough reason to send me screaming out to the limits of my voicebox but his car is just too hard to ignore.

Hydrogen technology dramatically reduces emissions generated by personal transport and, in particular, minimizes the emission of CO2. Running in the hydrogen mode, the BMW Hydrogen 7 essentially emits nothing but vapor. And, unlike fossil fuels and traditional gasoline, hydrogen is available in virtually infinite supply. With the BMW Hydrogen 7, the BMW Group is laying down a marker for sustainable mobility. This car will play a pioneering role in driving forward hydrogen technologies. Autobloggreen.Com

BMW Hydrogen 7 is also considered as the first hydrogen-drive luxury performance automobile for everyday use.

Brad, you are definitely a hottie!

Vatican turns green

June 6th, 2007 by angelfabad:hellokitty.com

Yes, you read it right. Vatican has announced its plans to harness solar energy in its buildings.

According to engineer Pier Carlo Cuscianna, Vatican endeavors to start the renovation of the roof of the Paul VI auditorium next year to put photovoltaic cells and replace the concrete panels. This move shows Pope Benedict XVI’s recognition of the vast environmental problems that we are currently facing.

Last summer, Benedict called on Christians to unite to take “care of creation without squandering its resources and sharing them in a convivial manner.” He said lifestyle choices were damaging the environment and making “the lives of poor people on Earth especially unbearable.” AP

Paul IV is a 6,300-seater auditorium used for concerts for pontiffs and celebrations every Wednesday during the winter season and in unruly weather anytime of the year.

The Vatican is considering the installation of photovoltaic cells on roofs of other Holy See buildings, although centuries-old landmarks like St. Peter’s Basilica won’t be touched. AP

This news made my day and justified my silence yesterday. It was the World Environment Day yesterday and I chose to keep silent about it because I was mourning for the many environmental crimes that happen each day.

I hope other leaders follow this laudable move, especially the most influential ones.

The Tree-Nation

June 5th, 2007 by angelfabad:hellokitty.com

I know it may sound crazy but sometimes, I do stop to appreciate the beauty of a tree. Its branches are like arms reaching out to me as if saying “Come, stay under my shade. I know you’re tired. Rest for a while. The sun’s too hot.”

Its huge trunk engages me to hug it. It tells me, “I know people are more huggable than I am but try to hug me. Commune with life’s energies. Some say it’s a form of ‘healing.’”

Then, some of its leaves fall to my feet. They fell like confetti, as if there was a celebration. The last time this happened was when I was at the play “The Night Before Christmas.”

“I feel like a winner, with all the nature confetti around me.”

Yes, you are a winner, a champion of the environment if you realize the true worth of a tree.
