A Hamster’s Tale
So… Our hamster died yesterday.
We were thinking that it was sleeping at first and David was poking it. It’s dead.
Adobo (the hamster) was at the corner of his cage, his teeth apparently stuck in the metal bar thing. It was actually pretty weird that he died cause Trisha’s help was playing with the hamster early at 5:30 in the morning. We went to her house at 9. I mean, if it was stuck, it could’ve still lasted for just a few more hours before we can rescue it!
So after making our maze (we were training Adobo for our Psych 140 project), we went to Tiendesitas to buy new ones. When I told the guy that our hamster died, he asked me if the hamster was already old. I told him that his teeth caught and he died.
He said, “Ah, your hamster committed suicide.”
My eyes went O_O and I asked, “Hamsters commit suicide?”
He asked, “Was the hamster alone?”
“Yes.”
He asked, “That’s just the way things are. When a hamster gets depressed, it bites the bars of its cage really really hard and will keep on biting it until it dies.”
When I relayed the message to my groupmates, David exclaims, “Emoooo!”
Again, happy birthday to Mon who celebrated his birthday on February 29! Ahaha! He treated us to lunch in Tiendesitas!

OMG… poor adobo.. he died alone. I am so feeling your grief. I had a hamster too before during my biology days, but not as experiment, but as a pet. His name was lucky.. he was doing well alone in his cage for 1 year because I was a full time mommy to it. When my then thesis mate had an extra hamster and needed to dispose of it, I volunteered to bring it home. After Chloe(the new one) and Lucky lived together for a month, Chloe got sick and died after a few days.. Poor lucky, soon after Chloe died, he somewhat looked sad and also got sick.. both of them died. huhuh… I never thought hamsters get depressed too.

How sad!
Pretty much like any human being when extremely lonely, I guess. I wonder how exactly does a hamster die from biting too hard on something? I mean, any physiologic explanation?

Dianaslittlehelper: Good thing that when one of your hamster died, the other one didn’t eat it! T_T I heard of that happening!
Denise: I never thought to ask
Maybe choke to death?

yikes… hamsters practice cannibalism??? ooohhh.

At least now you know Tiff. Always put yourself in the shoes of animals before petting them. Tsk. Imagine yourself locked in a cage without even a friend like your Bongski Bongski Bong Bong Bong. That would be so sad.
It always breaks my heart to see dead pets. ;(

My groupmate posted the pictures. So horrible
Loira: Thanks!

I am so depressed now. Poor hamster!
I will have to remind myself not to bite my bed-frame when I am depressed. I sometimes do that.
Hey, a friend told me that a hamster mom will only eat her babies if she feels that her babies are being threatened, and are in danger. Say, if she thinks that someone or something is going to hurt her baby, she will eat the baby. Or if she knows that the baby is not feeling well, she will also eat it. The reason is she wants to protect her baby and she thinks that by eating up her baby, she is protecting her from the danger. Is this true? It does make a lot of sense though, but I never had a hamster. My students told me that, and normally I would dismiss their grandmother stories but many of them seemed to have heard of this explanation before so I am not sure.

I read about that too!
Fairlady: He was so cute in his last day too
Buchi, our second hamster, on the other hand, was eaten :l

Yes :c I have pictures, if you can stomach them. There’s blood and all. And even a picture of Siomai (the female hamster) approaching him while he’s on the floor lying while bleeding! :/
March 9th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
OMG. Who had the heart to eat cute innocent hamster??? I’m so sorry about your loss, poor Adobo
I used to have many pets, and once my dog ran away and got eaten by our Bataknese neighbors, who ate dog meats. I can only imagine how sad it is for you *hugs*

with a name like adobo… did it end up to be one?
poor hamshtur
March 11th, 2008 at 9:13 am
The eaten one is our second hamster, Buchi :c He was about to be eaten by Siomai, the female hamster. So lesson learned: don’t name hamsters after food :c

Awww, how tragic!
March 15th, 2008 at 2:12 am
Oh no, I am getting a bit (or maybe more than a bit) confused with all the names. So there were three hamsters, namely, Adobo, Buchi and Siomai?
Are they your home-pets or Psych 140’s guinea pigs? I am sorry about all the tragic names and endings…
March 16th, 2008 at 2:22 am
They’re guinea pigs xD For training. The group owns them.
Adobo is the first hamster. He’s the one who killed himself (this post).
Siomai and Buchi are the next two hamsters. Siomai attacked Buchi. About to eat him, we thinks. And then Buchi died. :c That’s about it. Siomai is still alive, though
