Here in Brazil my parents told me that their parents (who were from Japan) told them that the bunny on the moon makes mochi! (The rice one, you know?XD)

erm….
Many versions is indeed but there is no such version that she transformed herself into a rabbit
she lives alone inside the moon palace & it is the rabbits that were keeping her company.
there are only 3 occupants inside the moon based on fairy tales & legends of the chinese
1) the rabbits
2) the Moon Godess, Chang Er
3) Wu Gang
